Connor in therapy session
Below is an interview with Connor's mom, Lara.
What were your feelings when you discovered Connor had a hearing loss?
We had mixed emotions when we found out Connor was deaf. We were shocked, surprised, concerned. But as time went on and the options were given to us, we accepted it and moved forward to helping Connor in whatever he needed to help him hear.
Why did you choose Dr. Bauer?
We chose Dr. Bauer because he was a reference from the Child Study Center in Fort Worth. They had heard good things about him so we made an appointment. I left Dr. Bauer's office that day with Connor and I knew that everything would be ok. He is so kind and explains every little thing to you and we really appreciated that. We had lots of questions and he answered all of them giving the pros and cons of cochlear implants and the surgery. He fights for you and your child every step of the way and that is such a wonderful quality to have in a doctor.
How did you make the decision for implantation?
We made the decision to have Connor implanted with the help of Dr. Bauer. He sat down with us and helped us understand all the benefits of Connor having a cochlear implant. We wanted Connor to have as normal a life as he would if he weren't deaf. With the help of Dr. Bauer and Callier, he will be able to go to school with his peers.
How did you come to trust us with Connor?
My husband and I left Callier the day we had Connor evaluated and we felt so comfortable knowing that everyone that saw him that day would have a part in helping him hear and speak. They explained every test they ran, they showed us all the different implants and the pros and cons of each, and overall they are so friendly and warm people. From the reception area to the therapists, everyone is there to help you and your child. We live in Fort Worth and we drive to Dallas for speech therapy once a week and sometimes we end up there 2 or 3 times a week. Even though it's a long drive for us to see the improvement Connor has made in such a short amount of time, it is absolutely worth it.
